Impressive and clever
Wow! This is nice! The thing that really sold it for me was the fact that you DIDN'T use some stupid hip-hop or rock song in the background. I really liked this.

Three things that an excellent Tetris clone needs:
1) The ability to rotate pieces in either direction
Current status: No
In the beginning levels this isn't trouble, but when you're at level 9 and above you don't have the ability to turn them more than twice before they're smashed into the ground, so you'll have to rotate them the right direction to get them in the right orientation
2) The "drop" button quickly slides the piece to the bottom, not instantly places it there
Current status: Yes
This is one of the more annoying quirks of bad tetris clones. In the early levels you can press the down button briefly to hurry the piece along and then slide it under another, instead of having to wait for it to s l o w l y make its way down
3) Smooth piece slide
Current status: No
This one is more of an aesthetic point, but smooth movement of pieces, I.E. moving one pixel at a time at a designated speed instead of one grid space at a time at a slower speed or sliding instead of "popping" into the new location or orientation really adds a great look to the game and makes it look much slicker
If you fix 1 and 3, (or even just 1) this game will be great.
P.S. On a sidenote, try to make the music loop seamless, instead of fading away and popping back. Also, allow for different background music.
P.P.S. The "Marioness" factor in this game is currently purely cosmetic. Perhaps you can do something to make it more mario-ish. Maybe mario saying "Super!" or "Yahoo!" when you get a Tetris. just a suggestion.

Make it taller than it is wide. It's impossible to see anything coming up ahead in time to do anything about it.
Change a few things
Speaking as a Game Design major, here are a few things you can do to really make this game shine:
1) Replace the lives with an energy bar. It gives the exact same effect as you have now, but people are more used to having a maximum cap (in this case, 8) on energy, not lives.
2) Pick a more accessible basis for the topic. The gameplay itself can be associated with any number of topics but the "keeping your buzz" idea is both overdone and poorly executed in this case.
3) Perhaps add some different game modes:
A mode where the size/shape of the arena changes.
A mode where you can gain some way to remove the "downers"
4) Spruce up the packaging and fix any glitches in the code.
and PLEASE put in a function to mute the music and/or sound.

Tutorials are probably one of the easiest things to program in flash and you STILL managed to fuck it up. You've got to fix your goto frames and your hit frames on your buttons.
If you have an outlined button make the button ACTUALLY CONTAINED IN THE OUTLINE.
You can't rewrite Samus' abilities just to fit your needs of a game. Since when was samus ever killed by falling into a pit? Also, the game is INCREDIBLY laggy on Newgrounds. do something about the quality to fix this.
This game is NOT laggy. There is no lag in this game. IF you have flash player 8 installed/don't have a shit machine
After level 10 the game starts glitching BADLY. It freezes for a frame every half second, which is repeatedly lethal for anyone playing. Fix it, and the game might be playable.
you just got a slow comp, and its newgrounds too, newgrounds dramatically slows down the game, i dont have this problem when i play it on my site.
This doesn't suck
There's a good sense of speed, which is necessary in any sonic game. improve the foregrounds and add some monsters, and you might got something here.
